This package contains four games: Werner's Quest Part 1-4. The parts are
named as follows:
1: The Black Ladder
2: Revenge of the Thing-Fish
3: Rance the Dungeonkeeper
4: Unchanter
These games were written as parodies of Zork I, II, III and Enchanter by
Jan Åberg in 1985, using the adventure creation system Quill on a Commodore 64.
The first part was also made available for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
Werners.D64 is a disk-image for use with C64 emulators such as VICE ( can be
found at http://viceteam.bei.t-online.de/ ).
In Februrary 2002, the games were converted into Z-machine format, using the
marvelous utility UnQuill v0.8, written by John Elliot. The resulting files
are Werner1.z5 through Werner4.z5. This means that they can be played on any
platform for which there is a Zcode interpreter. There are Zcode interpreters
for a wide array of platforms, including PC, Mac and Unix.
This package may be distributed freely, as long as all files ( four z5-files,
Werner.D64 and this textfile) are kept together and unmodified, and no one has
to pay for it. The only allowed exception is a nominal fee to cover the cost
of media and/or postage. This package may be included in non-profit software
collections. For any other usage than what has been stated here, permission
from the author is needed. He can be reached by email at jan.a.aberg@telia.com
There are still glitches in these Zcode games, at least if you are using
WinFrotz to play them. I've used Jzip to play instead, but I'm sure there are
many other Zcode interpreters that will do the job equally well. The problems
_may_ be due to a bug in WinFrotz, but I don't know for sure.
You can find interpreter recommendations for many different platforms at

If you use MS-DOS, Unix, BeBox or Atari ST, you could download Jzip
