INSTRUCTIONS FOR FRENCH TEST
The instructions will take you through the program screen by screen (see SCREEN
PLAN). To see the full scope and flexibility of the program, you will need a
disc with at least 10K spare for a demonstration of "Your own entries".
However, if you wish to make a series of your own tests, then a disc specially
set aside for this purpose is essential.
SCREEN 1
Having reset the computer and typed RUN "DISC" you will arrive at the MAIN
MENU. Press 1 to bring up the Topic Titles.
SCREEN 2
This screen displays all the preset Topic Titles together with the score
charts. Ignoring the MERGE facility for the moment, press the space bar for
the next page. Use the cursor keys to choose "ACTIVITIES-OUTSIDE" and press
RETURN to go to screen 3.
Note: If at any point you make a "wrong turn", pressing ESCAPE will take you
back to the MAIN MENU.
SCREEN 3
The test displayed is in two sections for GCSE, BASIC and HIGHER. The HIGHER
words are inverted. Choose the Basic words by pressing B.
SCREEN 4
Choose the FULL TEST option by pressing F - the other options will be explored
later.
SCREEN 5
By toggling the cursor keys on this screen, choose English to French: <- and
press RETURN.
SCREEN 6
Now complete the test, pressing RETURN each time you have made your entry. The
words are thrown up at random. If you are correct the word is erased,
otherwise it will be put back into the test. The function keys are used for
the accents which are displayed by pressing CONTROL A. The most commonly used
accents are organised to be nearest on the keyboard. Beware of extra spaces -
they will be regarded as a mistake. The frustration element ensures that the
learning is absolutely accurate and the words consequently more memorable.
SCREEN 7
When you have successfully completed the test you will be given a score, but no
PROGRESS ASSESSMENT can be made until the test is repeated. Press R, which
takes you back to SCREEN 5, and make the same choice, English to French. When
you have completed the test again and are satisfied that progress has been
achieved, then press E to return to the MAIN MENU. Had you chosen French to
English, which is clearly much easier, you would not automatically have
achieved a better score - the marks are carefully adjusted to account for this
difference.
From the MAIN MENU follow the same path to the Topic Titles and notice on page
two that your last score has been recorded against ACTIVITIES-OUTSIDE together
with the number of times the test was done. This time choose the MERGE option
and then select two or three topics by using the cursor keys and pressing
RETURN. A tick will appear against those chosen and pressing RETURN again will
deselect. Having chosen your topics then press L to load. On SCREEN 3 this
time, choose the SELECT option by pressing S.
SCREEN 8
Here each word will appear in the box and may be included in the test as
required. For the sake of the demonstration choose a dozen or so words to be
tested on and then hold down the N key to erase the rest. On SCREEN 4 this
time choose the SAVE TO OWN DISC option (S).
SCREEN 9
Giving a test a title and saving it is necessary if you wish to have a PROGRESS
ASSESSMENT and keep records on a SELECTION from the standard Topic Tests. Now
on returning to SCREEN 4 choose the QUICK TEST and then select French to
English.
SCREEN 10
The QUICK TEST requires you to give your answers mentally and then check
whether you were correct or not. The prompt (P) will give you one letter at a
time but using it will mean that the word stays in the test, just as it will
when you press the No option if you get it wrong. After going through the test
once you will come to SCREEN 11.
SCREEN 11
You may continue with the QUICK TEST by pressing C but for now press T and
Transfer the remaining words to the FULL TEST. A PROGRESS ASSESSMENT will not
be made as it is only part of a test.
SCREEN 12
Dictionary Tests, which operate in the same way as the Topic Tests, can be
found on the other side of the Disc and are accessed through the Main Menu.
These tests include essential vocabulary, and like Topic Tests are organised
into an easy to learn number of words under categories ranging from NUMBERS and
COLOURS to more general titles like NOTICES and SIGNS.
SCREEN 13
The OWN ENTRIES MENU is reached from the MAIN MENU. Ensure that you have your
own disc in the drive and choose the first option: List and Load Tests.
SCREEN 14
Here you should find the SELECTION you made earlier, as yet with no score.
Press RETURN and then choose the All (A) option from SCREEN 3. It may now be
used in the same way as a Topic or Dictionary Test.
SCREENS 15-20
The remainder of the program is self explanatory - creating a new test (SCREEN
15) and adding to exsisting ones (SCREENS 16-17). The position of the cursor
indicates what should be entered and where. Remember that the accents may be
viewed with CONTROL A. You can add to the Topic or Dictionary tests if you
first save them to your own disc. Adding words to one of your own tests,
however, will mean that any scores will be erased. The Edit option (SCREENS
18-20) enables the title or the words to be altered, or the test to be erased
completely.
NOTES:
1. In the Topic and dictionary tests the definite article (le or la) is
normally used to precede a noun except when it starts with a vowel when the
indefinite article is used. This rule is sometimes broken when the common
usage is in the plural or when the sense requires it (eg. un tiers - a third
or l'alpinisme - mountaineering).
2. If using the FULL TEST is taking too much time, then press ESCAPE, and use
the QUICK TEST to become more familiar with the words before returning to
the FULL TEST. To take full advantage of the program it is best to use it
"little and often" - several tests a week with regular repetition. The
Record Charts will help to organise this. If after having used the Program
a pass is not obtained at GCSE, then return the disc with the program intact
as proof of purchase, together with a copy of your Grade Certificate, and we
will refund your money by return.
La Guillotine
This is intended as a fun a way of increasing your vocabulary! Firstly load
the program by typing Run "DISC". When the MENU appears, insert the disc which
contains the words you wish to use, select the appropriate option and follow
the prompts. Choosing the French to English option is easier to start with.
You then proceed as in the game Hangman - choose a letter by typing it in and
continue until you have guessed the translation - it could be painful if you
choose wrongly! The letters used are displayed at the bottom of the screen,
together with the function keys for the accents. If learning vocabulary has
been a headache in the past, playing this game could be the solution!
