To use SPEEDTRANS simply type
RUN"DISC [press enter]
and follow the prompts
SPEEDTRANS is the most sophisticated Tape
to Disc transfer utility for speedlock
protected programs ever written. It will
certainly transfer more speedlock
protected games to disc than any other
dedicated speedlock transfer program on
the market today and with much greater
ease.
Other transfer programs require you to
know how long the game code is so that
you may run an alternative program for
the long or special games. In most cases
the loading screen is not saved because
these other utilities do not make use of
the extra memory available on 6128's (or
464/664 with any D'Ktronics RAMpack).
SPEEDTRANS is highly intelligent in that
it first reads the loader from the
incoming tape and establishes which type
of protection is in use from several
alternatives. At the end of the load
SPEEDTRANS finds out how long the code is
and, if too long to be saved in one file,
moves the excess into banked memory. The
screen will also be moved into banked
memory and compressed. It then saves the
screen and game (in possibly two parts),
writing the appropriate loader. It also
legalises the disc filename. Screen
files, having been compressed, can be as
small as 4K (Basket Master).
Another intelligent feature of SPEEDTRANS
is that the very first thing it does is
to find out which drive it is in. This
means that if you have a two drive system
you may run the program from drive B by
typing RUN"B:DISC or ùB:RUN"DISC.
However, the saving will ALWAYS be to
drive A so with a single drive you must
change the disc when prompted on screen.
Do remember that SPEEDTRANS does not save
all of the memory in the hope of saving
all the game. It saves exactly the right
length of code.
All this adds up to a lot less disc space
being used than with other transfer
programs and you will nearly always get
the loading screen. The exceptions to
this are when there is no loading screen
(as in SCRABBLE) or when the screen in
blanked out and more code is loaded into
the screen memory as in BMX SIMULATOR &
MADBALLS.
SPEEDTRANS creates totally stand-alone
files and if you do have another CPC,
even without extra memory, they will run
perfectly.
SPEEDTRANS will transfer not only the
original type of speedlock protection but
also the VERY LATEST types of speedlock
protection used in programs such as:
MATCHDAY II - FREDDY HARDEST
BASKET MASTER - ATV SIMULATOR
THE EIDOLON - RTYPE
SPEEDTRANS is the only utility that will
transfer to disc
MUTANTS 64K
SPEEDTRANS is the only utility to
automatically transfer to disc both
ALIEN HIGHWAY and REVOLUTION
so that they requiring NO "MEDDLING".
Most speedlock protected tapes can be
identified by cataloging the tape and
checking whether the second file has the
filename:
"! !"
Some speedlock protected tapes can be
identified by both the screen and border
flashing with horizontal bands of colour
immediately after the first file loads.
Others (RTYPE - ATV SIM) will appear to
load as normal with no sure method of
checking that they are speedlock
protected.
To use SPEEDTRANS simply insert our disc
in either drive and RUN"DISC. Once our
program has loaded follow the on-screen
prompts to insert your rewound speedlock
protected game tape and saving disc then
press play and any key.
SPEEDTRANS will display the saving name
on screen at the start of the load with
all except the very latest protection.
The game will appear to load as normal
but at the point where it would normally
start the Goldmark screen will re-appear
with the message that the "gamename" is
now saving. To run the transferred game
just RUN this name.
If the computer resets part way through
loading or the screen goes black at the
end of loading a tape read error has
probably occurred and the volume control
of the datacorder should be re-adjusted
and another transfer attempted.
Should you still experience problems and
providing the program is recorded on both
sides of the tape turn it over and try
the transfer again.
If the program will still not transfer
reset the computer and run the game
seperately. If it then fails to load
correctly SPEEDTRANS will not be able to
transfer it either.
Please bear in mind there are a large
number of speedlock and pseudo-speedlock
programs available that we have been
unable to test and there is a possibility
SPEEDTRANS will not be able to transfer
some of them.
Some programs use a "SPECTRUM" screen for
both opening and game screens and PRO SKI
SIMULATOR is one example. These can be
easily identified because the Goldmark
saving screen will be dis-jointed. The
screen shape can, in most cases, be
corrected by using the following loader:
10 FOR X=0 TO 15:INK X,0:NEXT
20 OUT &BC00,1:OUT &BD00,&20
30 OUT &BC00,2:OUT &BD00,&2B
40 OUT &BC00,6:OUT &BD00,&18
50 RUN"GAMENAME"
SCALEXTRIC
----------
Although SPEEDTRANS does transfer
SCALEXTRIC to disc it will not run. Using
the following loader will, however,
correct this:
10 LOAD"SCALEXTR"
20 DATA 21,29,BF,11,69,00,01,20,00
30 DATA ED,B0,C3,69,00
40 FOR X=&BF00 TO &BF0D
50 READ A$:POKE X,VAL("&"+A$):NEXT
60 SAVE"SCALEXTR",B,&BE80,&C0,&BEA4

What to do if an attempted transfer does
not work or the transferred program
doesn't run:
(1) Is it a speedlock program ?
(carry out the checks above)
(2) Re-adjust the data-corder volume
levels
(3) Try the other side of the tape
(4) Does the program run on its own?
(5) Is the program included in the list
above?
If the answer to both questions 1 and 5
is YES then send us the game tape
together with the disc to which the
transfer was made.
PLEASE ENCLOSE SUFFICIENT STAMPS
TO COVER RETURN POSTAGE
If you find a SPEEDLOCK program that is
not on our list write and tell us
enclosing a disc copy of the transferred
program. If the game is a multi-loader
please enclose the tape(s) as well so
that we can convert the remainder to work
from disc for you. Vouchers, valued at
£1.00 are given for each program
reported. These can be used as part
payment or exchanged for software and
hardware in our brochure. We will
return your disc with your vouchers.
